Project Description

Formation of Northern Part of Kornaros Square in the old town of Heraklion, Crete

The project falls under the rehabilitation measures of the Old City of Heraklion.

It focused on the functional and aesthetic improvement of Kornaros Square in the South of Averoff Street. This square is a traditional meeting place for people living in the suburbs and the countryside, for businessmen and employees of the center and for other visitors (and tourists).

The project was designed to:

on the one hand, in the functional redevelopment of the square as the main space for the expansion and stopping of public transport of the 1866 Traditional Food Market, which flows into the northern part of Kornaros square and on the other hand, the two important monuments of the square historic landmarks of urban management during the Venetian and Ottoman times.

These are two monuments demonstrating logistics for the water supply of the city and for the supply of water to the public space of the Agora.

It is the Fountain of the Venetian engineer Gian Matteo Bembo – Wall Fountain on the exterior wall of the monastery of the Savior of the Augustinian Eraites (San Salvador) – dating back to 1552-54 (Bembo Fountain), and for the charitable water reservoir and fountain or “Sable” of Hadji-Ibrahim Aga (Commander of Candace) in the northwest of the previous and outside the precinct of the Monastery of Sotiros renamed “Validé Mosque” dating back to 1776, a prominent building contrasted with its volume and decoration a hallway claiming a dominant position in the square.
