Project Description

6th and 44th Primary School of Heraklion, Municipality of Heraklion

The plot is located in the center of Heraklion, within a city plan, on Agios Titos Street, Europe & Anonymous east of the temple of Agios Titos and has a total area of 1.066,30 sq.m.

Within the plot there is a three-storey building with a total area of 938,49 sq.m. where the 6th and 44th Primary schools of Heraklion are housed. This building was constructed in the 1930s as a two-storey building with the beginnings of the modern movement, while in the 70’s it was the addition of one more floor and the roof.

In the original form, the building was “modernist”, influenced by the trends and fashion of the era based on simple geometry, canvas, rationalism, flat roof and all the elements with which the architects of the time expressed and formulated the architecture their opinion, known to all of us from the works of the famous Constantinides, Zenetos, Decadalas, etc.,

The shell of the old building remained as it was with the later four-storey roof, while the new building was a new volume with a flat roof lower than the old one, trying not only to stand out, but also to declare its new identity with the critical eye of the time to which he belongs without attempts of imitation and folklore, which simply created a stage effect of other seasons.

The new building faces with its simplicity the above-mentioned challenge of its integration into the environment, without, in any case, competing with the monument, but simply “completing” the existing buildings in a modern and critical spirit. The openings are simple and large as the old school, while its patches grow and “bite” the old construction, thus declaring their participation in the educational complex
